Uncle John Kopitiam

There are many kopitiams (coffee shops) scattered around town .Several generations of peoples cluster around marble topped tables and enjoy their cuppa of unforgettable coffee-made the traditional way-and served ominously dark and sweet.Followed by half boiled eggs delivered in their own cooking containers with instructions to leave for 5mins!! Then comes ...the toast, with a generous coating of butter and kaya sandwiched together. Each bite is a bliss with the sip of the coffee.
Unlike the olden days , the kopitiam concept have changed nowadays. What was before a shop which could accommodate even the low salary people now have changed to what one could say as expensive .Air cond, full fixtures and fittings with the olden day concept, and of course a huge menu that one can choose from a variety of toasts, rices and noodles.
Having tried quite a few Kopitiam eateries in town, there is one outlet that has tasty food to offer and what my family and I enjoy, Uncle John Kopitiam ,Melaka. Situated at Giant Hypermarket , Uncle John Kopitiam ,which was opened about 2 to 3 years back , has got its regular customers that stays loyal even after a few new one has sprouted out.
The interior of Uncle John. On the top right hand side is written all the available dishes.
On our first visit, we tried out the nasi lemak, curry noodle and hot beverages.Of course the Enrich chocolate drink is out of this world were my kids comment.Even after going to a few other Kopitiam shops around Melaka Raya,Batu Berendam , everyone felt it couldn’t beat the Uncle John’s food at Giant Supermarket.Being a coffeeholic , I have to give thumbs up to their Ipoh White Coffee, rich ,creamy and every ingredients is just correct for one to drink sip by sip.
We were eager to try other dishes as well and frankly after making a few trips there ,I can confidently say that their Nasi Lemak,Chicken Curry Noodle Hot plate Chicken Yee Mee ,Mee Goreng Mamak(spicy ) but tasty, Homemade Nasi Goreng(another spicy dish) ,Special Otak-otak Fried Rice,Nissin Noodle,Fried Mee Hoon Siam and the list just goes on, are all delicious.
At times, I do visit other Kopitiam outlets, and as bad as I feel, always compare it with Uncle John.Even the other customers there compare it with Uncle John at Giant Hypermarket.
Of course ,the price has increased due to the recent economical setback, still it is one outlet many don’t mind returning back again.
Beside noodles and rices, they serve a variety of breads such as Special Egg Toast,Butter and Peanut Butter Toast,Kaya Toast ,Curried Toast to name a few.

Garden Cafe, located at Dataran Pahlawan serves a large choices from local dishes along with sizzling and wok cuisines to cater the locals here.Even thou it is still new ,about one year since it started , the dishes have really taken to our taste bud.
A variety of rice dishes and noodles (all are one set dish) are served mainly in woks, claypots or hotplates.
A few in their menu are listed below:

What I have tasted and would recommend will be the Hokkien Bee Hoon Fried, Tom yam fried Rice, Spicy wok Noodle fried, all their fried rice variety are tasty , there is the mix vegetables also that is quite flattering. The dishes most ly priced at RM6.90 or more, gives a generous amount of rice or noodles which actually at times can be served for two!!!
On top of that Garden Cafe also serves popular authentic Malaysian dish like Nasi Lemak .Their drinks are thick and rich ,whether its hot or cold . A favourite of my family would be the citrus tea, blue coral drink, and orange juice. I personally njoy the hot coffee and lemonade.
There are over 50 dishes /drinks,including light meals, cold and hot beverages that will whet your appetite. The RM0.99 offer for teh tarik(tea) is a eye catcher.
Other then the delicious food presented , customers are able to take full advantage of movies shown on their TV screens while sipping on their favourite and chilling with friends and family.Overall its a place suited for families and each time when I go to Carrefour , never forget to njoy the meals served in Garden cafe.
This is my first entry for the places that I eat in Melaka. Even though born and raised in Port Klang,Selangor, after marriage I have been in Melaka. Its now 19 years since I have been here therefore I think I’am more known now as a orang Melaka then orang Selangor!!
Malacca or Melaka borders Negri Sembilan (another state) to the north and Johor to the south. The state is divided into three districts, that is Central Melacca or Melaka Tengah,Alor Gajah and Jasin.
Melaka City is the state capital. The city’s old quarter or the historical core has been listed as a World heritage Site of UNESCO since 7 July 2008.I still remember the day Melaka celebrated the event as my family and I were there. My son was very eager to see the parade that was arranged on that day . It was delayed by 1 hour I think that my husband suggested to head back home. As we were walking, there were some couples dressed in Baby Nyonya costume , Indian traditional costume ,Portugis traditional costume etc. I was eager to get some snaps of them that I went straight towards them . As I approached them , suddenly a man passed by giving hand shake , ah it was the Governor Of Melaka followed by the chief minister of Melaka. I was rather shy , ha ha ha, I pushed my husband in front , and he gave a hand shake to Melaka’s Chief Minister Datuk Mohd Ali Bin Rustam. Indeed it was an unforgettable day for us.
Ok , now getting back to Melaka,it has an area of only 1650sq km,it has many places of historical significance. In recent years ,many touristy ‘attractions’ have been added. The city center now boasts of giant ferries wheel dubbed ,Eye On Malacca. And for avid shoppers, the Hang Tuah Mall and Dataran Pahlawan is the latest place.
Speaking of food around Melaka, Baba Nyonya cuisine comes to mind . There are many restaurants serving unique cuisine but the majority of restaurants serving Nyonya food is in Melaka Raya. There are many places in Melaka that boosts good food, but I will not be covering all of them but will only write to those places which I have gone and like the food. The process of blogging will be slow as I will blog only places which I have images to add. Hopefully, it will help some of you who comes to Melaka to know where the good food are!!
